Everything you need to know about CIMA BA1.

BA1 — Fundamentals of Business Economics — is one of four Certificate Level papers in the CIMA qualification. It covers macroeconomics, microeconomics, the informational context of business, and the financial context of business. It is a 2-hour computer-based exam with 60 objective test questions, available on demand at Pearson VUE test centres. You need 70% to pass.
BA1 is split into four sections: A — Macroeconomic and Institutional Context of Business (25%) covering GDP, inflation, monetary and fiscal policy; B — Microeconomic and Organisational Context of Business (30%) covering supply and demand, market structures and pricing; C — Informational Context of Business (20%) covering data, information systems and technology; and D — Financial Context of Business (25%) covering financial markets, interest rates and exchange rates.
BA1 is considered one of the more accessible Certificate Level papers. It is a mix of conceptual and numerical questions — you'll need to understand economic theory and apply it, but the calculations are not heavy. Students with a background in economics or business studies often find the content familiar. With focused practice on past-style questions and a good understanding of the four syllabus areas, BA1 is very achievable.
Most students allow 3–5 weeks of study for BA1, studying a few hours per week alongside work. If you have a background in economics, you may need less time. The key is not just reading the material — consistent practice with exam-style questions is what builds the exam technique needed to hit 70%.
There is no required order for the Certificate Level papers. Many students start with BA2 as it provides a good foundation for BA3. BA1 and BA4 have less overlap with the other papers, so they can be sat at any point. If you have a background in economics or business, starting with BA1 can be a confidence boost early in your studies.
BA1 follows the 2017 CIMA Certificate syllabus, which is the current syllabus for all Certificate Level papers. Unlike the Professional Level papers (E1–E3, F1–F3, P1–P3), the Certificate Level has not been updated since 2017. All PTA BA1 materials are fully aligned to this syllabus.

After passing BA1 you still need to complete BA2, BA3 and BA4 to finish the Certificate Level and earn the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting. Once all four Certificate papers are passed, you can progress to the Operational Level (E1, F1, P1 and the OCS). BA1 links directly into E1 — Managing Finance in a Digital World — at the Operational Level.
