What is the SCS Exam All About?
The Strategic Case Study is not like a traditional exam. You’re no longer a student regurgitating theory — you’re stepping into the role of a Senior Manager in a real-life organisation (fictional, but realistic). Your job is to advise the board, contribute to strategic decisions, and respond to urgent challenges during the exam.
Each exam is based on a pre-seen document (like Leothayre for the May–Aug 2025 sitting, you can download the official pre-seen materials for any preseen directly from the CIMA website.) and a set of unseen tasks you’ll receive on exam day.
You must go beyond theory. The examiner is looking for business sense, strategic insight, and strong communication skills.
- E3 (Strategic Management)
- P3 (Risk Management)
- F3 (Financial Strategy)
Why is the SCS So Challenging?
The Strategic Case Study is often seen as the toughest of the three case study levels — and for good reason:
- You must apply, not recite:You won’t score marks for quoting models like SWOT or Porter’s Five Forces. You’ll score by applying them to the scenario.
- Time pressure is intense: You’ll have around 45 minutes per task. That’s not a lot of time to read, plan, and write.
- Real-time decision-making: It’s not just about knowing the answer — it’s about presenting it clearly, concisely, and confidently.
But here’s the good news: you don’t need to be perfect. You just need to show the examiner that you can think like a senior manager and communicate like one too. If you understand how to pass SCS by applying your knowledge with confidence and clarity, you’ll already be ahead of most candidates.
The Skills You Need to Pass SCS
To succeed in the SCS exam, you’ll need a mix of technical understanding and professional skills. Mastering these is key if you want to truly understand how to pass SCS with confidence. Here are the top four skills our tutors focus on with students:
🗣️ Communication
You must write clearly, logically, and with purpose. Avoid waffle. Structure your answers using subheadings, and write in full sentences as if you’re speaking to the board.
💼 Commercial Awareness
Demonstrate that you understand the organisation's sector, competitors, and strategic context. Refer back to the pre-seen and current task requirements at all times.
⚖️ Judgement
Prioritise what matters. If you have 30 minutes to respond to a board-level issue, you can’t list every possible theory. Focus on the most relevant risks, costs, benefits, and practicalities.
🔗 Integration
SCS is all about combining E3, P3, and F3. You can’t just give a financial answer or a risk answer in isolation — the best scripts weave them together.
How to Structure Your SCS Preparation
This is the weekly structure we use in our SCS courses — and it works. It gives you enough time to build confidence, practise writing, and master the key issues likely to come up.
Week 1–2: Kickstarter & Industry Familiarisation
- Thoroughly read the preseen material (twice at minimum)
- Understand the organisation’s business model, key players, and recent performance.
- Research the industry — what challenges and trends are shaping it?
- Watch our preseen analysis and industry overview videos (if using our course).
Week 3: E3 Focus
- Review the most commonly tested E3 topic and how they apply to the case.
- Practise writing short answers to E3-style tasks (e.g. strategy implementation, stakeholder management).
- Start Mock 1 — this first mock should focus on structure and getting used to writing under pressure.
Week 4: P3 Focus
- Revisit key P3 areas like risk assessment, controls, cyber risk, ethics.
- Do 5 practice tasks that tie the preseen to P3 topics.
- Attempt Mock 2 — focus on timing and addressing the question directly.
Week 5: F3 Focus
- Study areas like funding strategies, investment appraisal, financial risk.
- Practise calculating and interpreting ratios and NPV-style questions in context.
- Attempt Mock 3 with full focus on integrating E/P/F thinking.
Week 6: Mocks & Key Issues
- Watch our Key Issues video — we analyse the most likely exam themes based on the pre-seen.
- Take Mock 4 and review the tutor’s walkthrough of how to tackle it.
- If you’re in our Advanced or Ultimate course, get some of your mocks marked for feedback.

Expert Tutor Tips to Help You Pass
Here are some of our tutors’ favourite reminders as the exam approaches:
- Always answer the question asked. It’s easy to go off-track. Stick to the requirements.
- Use subheadings. hey help the examiner navigate your script and make your points clear.
- Plan before you write. Spend 5 minutes sketching your answer. It improves structure and saves time overall.
- Don’t overcomplicate. You’re not trying to impress with technical terms — you're advising real people in real situations.
- Get feedback. If you can, get your mocks professionally marked. Honest critique will help you improve much faster.
Final Tips for Exam Day
Let’s end with some last-minute advice for the big day:
🧠 Be strategic with your time. Don’t spend too long on Task 1 and run out of time for Task 4.
📖 Refer to the pre-seen – but don’t copy it. Apply it intelligently to the unseen task.
💡 Stick to your plan. Trust your preparation and avoid second-guessing.
🧘 Stay calm. Even if you blank on a task, move on and come back. Partial marks are still valuable.
