What Makes the OCS Exam Unique?

Unlike your E1, F1, and P1 objective tests, the OCS exam is not about ticking boxes. It’s about demonstrating your ability to apply knowledge in a practical, business-like context.

You’ll be given a fictional company (for May–Aug 2025, it’s Halfpenny, a packaged bread manufacturer), and you’ll act as a Finance Officer. On exam day, you’ll receive unseen tasks that test your ability to make decisions, communicate advice, and analyse financial and non-financial information in a relevant way.

Success comes down to more than just memory — it’s about application, structure, and exam technique.

Know What You’re Being Tested On

The OCS isn’t a test of memory — it’s about how well you apply knowledge from E1, P1, and F1 in a practical setting. But not all three papers are equally weighted in terms of importance.

You’re being assessed across four key skill areas:

🔎 Tip: Focus most on P1 and F1 — especially budgeting, variance analysis, working capital, and financial reporting. Use E1 to add context and depth, especially when discussing ethics or business implications.

Make the Most of the Preseen

Once the pre-seen is released (usually 6–7 weeks before the exam), read it like a detective. Understand the company’s:

For May–Aug 2025, the company is Halfpenny, a long-established packaged bread producer in Keeland. Pay close attention to things like product range, production process, supply chain, and distribution challenges.

But don’t memorise the pre-seen — understand it. Make notes, summarise key points, and start thinking about what could be asked in the exam.

Week-by-Week Strategy

Here’s a simple plan we use in our courses, and it works brilliantly for most students:

Week 1–2: Get Oriented

Week 3: Focus on P1 (Your Role)

This is the paper most relevant to the Finance Officer role.

Week 4: F1 Focus

Move on to financial accounting topics.

Week 5: E1 Focus

Now it’s time to think about the business environment.

Week 6: Practise Mocks!

Mocks are where you bring it all together.

By now, your knowledge should be solid, and it’s all about application and refinement.

Week 7: Revise Smart and Stay Calm

Mocks are where you bring it all together.

Exam Technique: The Make-or-Break Factor

Even if you know everything, you still need to write answers that score. Here are key tips:

Practising how you write, not just what you know, is what sets high-scoring students apart.

Avoid These Common Pitfalls

Don’t let these small things cost you valuable marks!
