How to Pass CIMA Case Study Exams: Structure, Strategy & Preparation

To pass a CIMA case study exam, you need a scaled score of at least 80 out of 150 while meeting the minimum competency threshold in each assessed area, demonstrating your ability to apply technical knowledge, business judgement, and professional communication to realistic business scenarios under exam conditions.

To pass a CIMA case study exam, you need to score 80 or above on a scale of 0–150 — approximately 53% of the available marks. But here’s the catch: you don’t just need an overall pass. CIMA also sets a minimum competency threshold for each syllabus area tested, typically around one-third of the marks available within that competency. This is how CIMA ensures you’re not just scraping by on raw calculation skills; you’re demonstrating integrated business thinking across all assessed areas. Understanding this structure changes how you prepare and gives you a clear roadmap for how to pass CIMA case study exams successfully.

From my KPMG background and over a decade in global finance, I’ve seen how case study success comes down to one thing: candidates who prepare with structure win. The ones who treat the pre-seen as a one-time read before the exam, or who memorise frameworks without understanding the company, consistently fall short. Here’s exactly what structured preparation looks like.

Understanding the Exam Structure: How to Pass CIMA Case Study

A CIMA case study exam is a three-hour, computer-based assessment — 180 minutes including a 15-minute tutorial. The exam presents a realistic business scenario via a pre-seen document (released seven weeks beforehand), then serves you new information on exam day. Your job is to respond to questions that simulate real business problems: analysing data, recommending strategies, and justifying your decisions in a professional, structured way.

There are five different variants of each case study exam, so if multiple candidates sit on the same day, they face different scenarios. This prevents question leakage and ensures marking fairness. Results take 4–5 weeks because human markers assess your responses against a competency-based marking grid — not a computer algorithm. That human element means your communication and reasoning matter as much as your technical answer.

How Case Studies Differ from Objective Tests

Objective tests (OT exams like E1, P1, F1) measure your speed and knowledge in 60 questions over 90 minutes. You answer quickly, move on, and your score is scaled based on question difficulty. Case studies are a fundamentally different beast.

⏱️ Time Allocation by Level

Operational Case Study (OCS) 5 questions × ~36 mins each
Management Case Study (MCS) 4 questions × ~45 mins each
Strategic Case Study (SCS) 3 questions × ~60 mins each

Time is allocated per question. You cannot carry over unused time to the next question. Plan your answer structure within your allocated time slot.

Each case study question has a dedicated time slot — for example, OCS (Operational) has 5 questions, MCS (Management) has 4, and SCS (Strategic) has 3, with time allocated proportionally. You can’t ‘make up time’ by rushing through one question. If you finish one in 45 minutes and have 60 allocated, you can’t carry the extra 15 minutes to the next. Time is locked per question, so your approach has to shift from ‘answer fast’ to ‘answer thoroughly within your time window.’

The key difference: OTs test whether you know things. Case studies test whether you can apply what you know to a real business problem and communicate your reasoning clearly. That’s why preparation strategy is completely different.

What the Competency Framework Actually Tests

CIMA publishes a competency framework that defines what you’re assessed on. At Operational level, E1 is tested across all case studies as a supporting paper — it underpins everything. At Management and Strategic levels, different papers carry different weights.

Here’s what examiners actually look for when they mark your answer:

I’ve seen candidates score 85+ overall but still fail because their ‘Integration’ score fell below the minimum threshold. That’s why understanding the framework upfront is critical — it shapes how you study and how you answer.

Preparation Strategy: Pre-Seen Analysis to Exam Day

The pre-seen document is your starting point — not your ending point. Seven weeks before the exam, CIMA publishes a detailed business scenario. Most candidates skim it once, then panic the week before and try to cram. That approach fails, and I’ve watched it happen too many times.

Here’s what actually works: Read the pre-seen multiple times with a specific goal each time. First pass: identify the company, industry, key products, and major problems. Second pass: analyse the financials, compare to competitors (if provided), spot trends. Third pass: identify which CIMA models apply (strategic frameworks, financial analysis tools, etc.). By exam day, you should know the pre-seen so well that when new information arrives, you slot it into a framework you’ve already built.

On exam day, new information comes via messages — emails, reports, data — the examiners’ way of saying ‘Here’s a new problem. What do you recommend?’ Your answers must be structured, justified, and specific to that company’s situation. Generic frameworks copied from a textbook won’t score well.

Common Mistakes That Cost Candidates Marks `

Not analysing the pre-seen thoroughly: Candidates who haven’t studied the pre-seen deeply often give generic answers that could apply to any business. Examiners immediately spot this, and marks are deducted for lack of context and specificity.

Unstructured answers: Long paragraphs with no headings are hard for markers to follow and score lower. Use short paragraphs, clear section headings, and bullet points where appropriate. Good structure makes it easy for the marker to find your reasoning.

Ignoring the competency thresholds: Some candidates score 80+ overall but fail because one competency sits below the minimum. Before your exam, review past marking guides to see what ‘Proficient’ vs. ‘Above Proficient’ actually looks like in context.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pass mark for CIMA case studies?

You need a scaled score of 80 or above out of 150 to pass (approximately 53%). However, you also must achieve a minimum competency threshold in each assessed area — typically around one-third of the marks available within each competency. An overall 80 won't help if one competency is below threshold.

How long do I have per case study question?

Time is allocated per question, not total. OCS has 5 questions with ~36 minutes each; MCS has 4 questions with ~45 minutes each; SCS has 3 questions with ~60 minutes each. You cannot borrow time from one question to another.

When is the pre-seen released?

Seven weeks before your exam. You have seven weeks to analyse it, understand the company, and prepare your approach. This is not a 'cram the night before' window — good preparation starts immediately.

What happens if I fail one competency but pass overall?

You fail the exam. CIMA publishes a competency-based marking grid, and you must meet the minimum threshold in every competency area. If Integration is below threshold but your overall score is 82, you still fail. This is why understanding the competency framework is critical.

How long does it take to get results?

4–5 weeks. Case studies are manually marked by CIMA examiners, not auto-scored. This is slower than OTs but ensures consistent, fair assessment.

Can I use past case studies to practise?

Yes. CIMA publishes past papers and marking guides on CIMA Connect. These are invaluable — they show exactly what a pass-level answer looks like, what an above-proficient answer includes, and where candidates commonly lose marks. Practise with these under real time pressure.

Ready to Pass Your Case Study?

The best way to prepare is to practise with real case study scenarios under exam conditions. PTA offers dedicated packages for each level, complete with video walkthroughs, marking guides, and expert feedback. Choose your level and start preparing today.

The Bottom Line

Passing a CIMA case study requires more than technical knowledge — it requires structured thinking, strategic preparation, and clear communication. You need 80 out of 150 plus competency thresholds in every area. You have limited, locked time per question. You’re marked by experienced professionals using a detailed rubric, not a computer algorithm.

The good news: if you understand the structure from day one, prepare with past papers, and practise under real exam conditions, you can absolutely pass. Start with the pre-seen seven weeks out, refine your understanding week by week, and enter the exam with a framework and confidence that shows in every answer.
