10 Things You Should Know About CIMA Students and Members Worldwide

How old are CIMA members and students? How many have degrees before beginning CIMA; and what type of degrees do they possess? What sectors do CIMA members and students work in? How many CIMAs are women? This article offers you 10 interesting statistics all CIMA members and students should know about, in order to make the best of their career options and career advancement potential.


In our last post, we looked at Trends in the Accountancy Profession: 11 Things CIMA Students and Members Should Know. The article was based on the Financial Reporting Council's (FRC) June 2016 report on Key Facts and Trends in the Accountancy Profession.

In addition to the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the other accountancy bodies covered by the report included the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and the Association of International Accountants (AIA).


As noted in the earlier article, there were 102,942 CIMA members and 125,763 CIMA students worldwide by the end of 2015.


Where Are CIMA Members and Students Employed?

    1. "CIMA has the highest percentage of students in industry and commerce (79%)” notes the report."Collectively, 54% of students are in industry and commerce across the accountancy bodies."
    2. A slightly fewer proportion of CIMA members are employed in industry and commerce.

 

CIMA Members and Students are NOT in Accounting Practice

    1. It is hardly news that very few CIMA members and even fewer students are engaged in accounting practice. That is not what CIMA is supposed to equip you for.

    1. Just over one third (34%) of worldwide CIMA members are women. This is slightly below the proportion of women in accounting (35%) going by the global numbers given here.
    2. FRC 2016 report notes that ACCA has the largest proportion of female members of all the accountancy bodies (46%).
    3. It is encouraging to see that CIMA students make up for the shortage. By 2015 female students accounted for 46 percent of CIMA students worldwide.

 

How Old Are CIMA Members?

    1. The chart shows that approximately one in five CIMA members are between ages 25 and 34. There was a slight decline in young member numbers between 2011 and 2015.
    2. The majority of CIMA members globally are in the 35-44 age group.

    1. By 2015, a quarter of CIMA students worldwide are under 25 years. There is a clear increase in the proportion of younger students from 2011 numbers.

 

How many CIMA students have a degree? And how many hold a degree relevant to the CIMA qualification?

  1. Over half of the CIMA students globally hold a degree. Slightly over 40 percent hold a relevant degree.
